C’est au fond des puits que les mineurs ont donné un véritable sens au mot " Solidarité ", car dans les entrailles de cette terre qui les nourrit, face au danger permanent, l’homme se sent petit, fragile et nu, qu’il soit Polonais, Italien, Alsacien, Ukrainien ou autre, il ne peut tricher.
Grâce à leurs colères redoutables et leurs révoltes légendaires, leurs conditions de travail se sont considérablement améliorées dans les dernières années. Après un siècle d’exploitation, les puits ferment et leurs chevalements sont abattus les uns après les autres. Témoin d’un autre âge, ce patrimoine industriel disparaîtra-t’il à jamais en même temps que sa mémoire ?

Down in the minepits the word " solidarity " takes on its full meaning. Whilst the bowels of the earth provide an income for miners there are constant dangers. Each man feels small and fragile. Irrespective of whether he is Polish, Italian, Alsatian or Ukranian, cheating cannot exist.
In recent years, legendary revolts and strikes led by miners improved their working conditions. After a century of mining, the pits are closing down and the pithead shafts destroyed one after another; all vestiges of the past. Will this industial heritage disappear at the same time as the memories it represents ?
